# Text to 3D: create a model from a prompt

> Turn a text description into a 3D model with Mint. Write a clear object brief, choose a generation workflow, review the result, and retrieve a GLB.

**Access:** Public guide. Modeler preview creation requires approved beta access and sufficient Credits. Other API services follow their current access requirements.

Text-to-3D means creating a three-dimensional object from a written description. Mint offers a [3D Model generation workflow](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/3d-models.md) and a separate [Modeler workflow](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/modeler.md) for static models and revisions. Choose the workflow before you start; their inputs, operation types, and outputs differ. Modeler is the current web interface; other supported generation types use API and MCP workflows.

## Write a useful 3D model prompt

Start with one subject. Specify its silhouette, proportions, materials, and visual style. Add dimensions when scale matters, then explain how you plan to use the model. Avoid combining an entire room and all of its objects into a single object request.

```text theme={null}
A small freestanding desk lamp with a round ceramic base, a curved brass stem,
and a wide orange fabric shade. About 40 cm tall. Keep the silhouette simple
and make the base, stem, and shade easy to distinguish. Intended for a product
visualization scene.
```

Treat these details as the brief to review against, rather than proof that the delivered file satisfies every requirement. Inspect the result before integrating it into your project.

For a group of props, use an [Asset Pack](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/asset-packs.md). For a whole place, use a [World](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/worlds.md). For a surface without geometry, use a [Material](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/materials.md).

## Choose standard generation or Modeler

| Workflow | Useful when | Review and revision |
| - | - | - |
| [3D Model generation](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/3d-models.md) | You want a generated object or character with downloadable files | Automatic final generation by default; optional Preview review and Preview revision |
| [Modeler](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/modeler.md) | You want a static model from text or images with follow-up changes | Revise a delivered Modeler asset with a new description; previous successful versions remain available |

A Preview revision changes the visual proposal before final generation. A Modeler revision operates on an existing successful Modeler result. They are separate operations.

## Create through the API

Read the [quickstart](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/quickstart.md) to configure server-side authentication. For the standard 3D Model service, submit a prompt to `POST /v1/models:generate`. Save the operation ID and poll until it reaches a final state. Use `generationMode: "review"` only when you need to inspect and approve a Preview before continuing.

After success, use the returned resource ID to retrieve the model and its [artifact manifest](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/assets.md). Download the actual returned file URL. Do not derive a download URL from a model name or operation ID.

For Modeler, follow [its service guide](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/modeler.md), including reference images, beta access, quality tiers, revisions, cancellation, and GLB delivery.

## Check the delivered model

Open the GLB in the intended viewer or editor. Check the silhouette from several angles, the scale, materials, and any fine details that affect your project. A model that looks good in a thumbnail may need changes for close-up rendering.

* For a slow-loading GLB from standard generation, consider [optimization](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/3d-models.md#optimize).
* For topology-focused work, consider [retopology](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/3d-models.md#smart-topology).
* For another supported delivery format, use [conversion](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/3d-models.md#convert).
* For movement, check [animation eligibility](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/animation.md). Modeler's primary output is static.

## Common questions

### Can I describe a 3D model without uploading an image?

Yes. The standard 3D Model API accepts a prompt without reference images. Modeler also accepts a text-only request. Use [image-to-3D guidance](https://docs.mint.gg/guides/image-to-3d.md) when visual reference matters more than a written description alone.

### Does a prompt guarantee game-ready or printable geometry?

No. Check the delivered model against your engine, rendering, or fabrication requirements. File-format support and successful generation do not certify performance, printability, or manufacturing tolerances.

### How much does generation cost?

The service, generation settings, and selected quality affect cost. Use [Credits and usage](https://docs.mint.gg/developers/credits-and-usage.md) and the current interface for pricing rather than assuming every model has the same cost.
